Quilting A la Carte
Pick and choose from these classes to learn the basic   sewing and quilting techniques. While these classes do build on each other, if you have some cutting, sewing or quilting experience you can skip a class or two. Each class priced separately or Special $75 if you sign up for all 5 classes!


Plan Your Quilt

This class is designed for beginning quilters who are overwhelmed by selecting fabric for their  quilt. Time will be spent in the shop selecting fabrics that will make your quilt a visual success. Class will focus on theme fabrics and complementary colors that will add texture and "pop".

 

Cut It Up

If you have never used the rotary cutter…this is the perfect class. Learn  basic cutting techniques and safety skills. You’ll  cut  the fabric for a lap size quilt.

 

 

Sew It Up

In this class  learn machine piecing and  how to assemble  pre-cut quilt pieces. Attending the “Cut it Up” class, or basic knowledge of rotary cutting is required, as your quilt pieces are cut before class.  Class will focus on strip piecing and half square triangles.

 

 

Square It Up

Make sure your patchwork blocks are perfectly square with the technique you’ll learn. Once your blocks are all the same size, you will piece your quilt top together.

 

Border It Up

Having trouble getting quilts to lay flat? Join Muriel and learn the correct way to attach borders and sashing. This class will focus on attaching borders to a pre-sewn top.


Quilt It Up

After you’ve cut your fabrics…sewn your blocks together….this class shows you how to mark and machine quilt a  lap sized quilt. Learn about batting, basting, including ‘spray basting’, and begin quilting your top.

The perfect class to learn  the basics of patchwork. Anne shows how to make templates and mark fabric the traditional way as well as a new method using stamps which has become very popular. She’ll show stitching techniques to hand piece patchwork blocks. This class  takes the “puzzle” out of patchwork.

Discover, or rediscover, the lovely relaxing art of hand quilting. Learn basics - the fundamentals for marking, basting, quilting, finishing…even hanging your  quilt!  If you have a quilt top, bring it for discussion and Anne will show you how to prepare it for  hand quilting.


Binding Your Quilt I

Learn the secrets of continuous double-fold binding, mitered corners, machine or hand finishes.  Many different types of binding will be taught.   Turn your sample piece into a cute “3 Pocket Purse!” We’ll discuss  “mock” and “pillow turn” bindings. If you have a quilt ready for binding, Muriel will help determine which method to use.


Color Plan Your Quilt

Hand Appliqué

Appliqué is all the rage!  Have you tried, but not liked it? Using a simple floral appliqué, Anne will teach  the needle turn method along with the importance of using the correct needles and thread. It’s the perfect class for beginners or those wanting to improve their appliqué techniques

Have you tried appliqué and just can't get the hang of it? This is the class for you. It’s great for beginners and those who wish to polish their appliqué skills.  In the 6 hour class, you’ll learn many methods of appliqué, including stems and circles, and be able to choose which methods are best. Appliqué several little hearts and use them for the little quilt "You've Stolen My Heart”,  in Elly Sienkiewicz’s book.

 

Invisible Machine Appliqué

Do you love the look of appliqué, but don't think you have the time to do it?  Try this easy method that looks like hand appliqué, but can be sewn in a fraction of the time!    No sticky glue, wetting, or trimming required!  Learn to prepare templates, choose fabric, thread, shape appliqué pieces, and adjust the stitch on your machine to give you that "hand sewn" look.

 

Machine Quilting I

Machine quilting is…marking…layering the top, choosing batting and backing…free motion…in the ditch…straight line… Learn about thread, batting and other tools, while you work on sample squares. Bring quilt tops for discussion.

 

Free Motion Quilting

Free yourself from straight lines in machine quilting projects. Learn to design your own patterns, draw feathers, and use no-mark designs, stippling, meandering… and more! You should have some machine quilting experience. All work will be done with the darning or free motion foot.

 

Scrambled Eggs Quilt

This is a quick, fun, fat quarter lap quilt that was designed by Billie Lauder.  It is made up of blocks of multiple squares and rectangles of different sizes.  But we won’t be sewing them together individually.  Of course not!  We will use a quick shortcut method for each block.  Join us to find out how.  Perfect for all skill levels.

 

Storm at Sea

Paper piecing is easy using this method. Debbie shares how to  adapt traditional blocks into a paper piecing project whenever possible.  Storm at Sea is a very versatile pattern that consists of two sizes of Square-in-a-Square blocks and a diamond-in-rectangle block.  You'll start on a lap quilt that can be made using scraps or using a planned dark/light fabric combination. After this class you’ll start looking at traditional blocks in a new way.

 

Introduction to Patchwork

Let’s Make a Purse

You will use  “Bow Tucks Tote” pattern or  “Sew Charming Purse” pattern to create a great bag showcasing different fabrics of your choice. The Bow Tucks is loaded with pockets. The Sew Charming is one of our most popular bag patterns and has really sturdy handles. This fun class will inspire you to create a wardrobe of bags.

 

 

Beginner Foundation Piecing

Always wanted to try paper piecing but don’t know where to start?  Learn this easy technique to make a house block and Santa block, and learn  tips and techniques to try more challenging pieces. 

Mariner’s Compass

Back by popular demand! Sew an easy Mariner’s Compass block. Make a 15” block using an easy paper piecing method with no curved seams!  You’ll  have a beautiful block, plus the skills to make other paper piecing projects with perfect points. Join us for a day of nautical fun!

Hunter Star

If you have always admired the Hunter’s Star block but thought of it as too complicated to piece … fear no more.  By just cutting strips and squares of fabric, and using  the Hunter’s Star ruler you can create a beautiful wallhanging or table runner or begin a quilt.   Work with just two colors of fabric, three, four, or go for a scrappy look in any style.. reproduction, feedsack, contemporary…the choice is yours. 

 

Doll Clothes Workshop

Indulge your “Inner Child” and join us for a full day of fun and play. This class will be dedicated to making contemporary-styled clothes for 18” dolls (such as American Girl) based on the new book “Love to Dress Up 18” Doll Clothes”. Linda has lots of experience in this area and will share special techniques she developed when she had a business making doll clothes. Basic sewing skills necessary.

 

Table Runners & More

Looking for a really fast and easy way to decorate your table for any occasion?  In this class you will learn how to make reversible napkins, table runners, and placemats,  using a neat technique for finishing. Also learn how to easily customize the size to fit your table.

 

Redwork Stitchery

Learn the best way to transfer a stitchery  pattern to fabric. Elisabeth will teach you the basic stitches used in traditional redwork as you work on the pattern of your choice. We’ll have several for you to choose from and provide you with  fabric. You may want to purchase a linen towel to stitch on.  Several suggestions will be given  on how you could use your finished piece.

 

Embroidery and Crazy Quilt Stitches

Have you ever wanted to embellish a quilt with embroidery and thought that it was too intricate and difficult? In this class you will learn various embroidery stitches and motifs that you can use to adorn your crazy quilt or any regular quilt and make it unique. This is a fun way to create a whimsical, personalized and original work of art.

 

Big Stitch’ Quilting

You’ll love this different technique for hand quilting using the ‘quilting big stitch’. This fast, fun, and easy stitch will look great on many projects. Using pearl cotton and a hoop, Barbara shows how to plan your quilting pattern (without marking!) and ‘big stitch’ your way to an amazing finish.

Rug Hooking

Learn the  wonderful craft of making rugs from wool.  Every step in the process is covered while making the rug from a kit you purchase from us, (discounted price for students). Rug hooking is soft, quiet and the end result is an heirloom. We carry hand dyed 100%  wool, foundations, books, frames…everything you need for rug hooking.

 

Needle Punch / Rug Punch

Needle Punch or Rug Punch….In this class you’ll see both techniques. They are similar but also quite different. Needle punching creates small masterpieces with embroidery floss or pearl cotton, that look like small hooked rugs, ideal for framing. Rug punching is similar, but done with hand dyed wool yarn, and looks like a hooked rug.

 

Great Snow Event of 2010- Sew In

Make a “snow ball stash buster quilt” Start the day with hot cocoa and  the new year right…use up some of your stash. We provide the pattern and you gather blue and white fabrics (any genre)…spend the day sewing, and go home with a pile of snowballs! You can even bring a UFQ to work on. Bring your finished top (any size), before the big thaw on the 31st and get 20% off backing fabric.  You’ll have an avalanche of fun, but space is limited!

 

Rainy Day Springtime Sew In

X – Block Techniques

Mixed Media

Wool Works

If you’re working with wool…come join us! That’s the only requirement. We’re gathering on the 2nd Friday of each month to work on any project using wool…rug hooking, rug punching, penny rugs,...anything as long as wool is one of the fibers! We’ll share tips and ideas. Meet quilters, rug hookers, rug braiders, knitters…even spinners! Join us!

 

Wool Crazy

In the first class you’ll build a crazy quilt wool base as described in the book "Wool Crazy" layering the wool on a base fabric and do some decorative stitching to secure. In the second class Fran will show you how to apply wool appliqués using the patterns in the book or additional patterns of your choice. You could finish a small quilt or be well on your way to something bigger.

 

Quotation Quilt

Finishing Stitchery

Attend this class to learn some easy ways to finish, mat and frame your embroidery or needle punch pieces. There will even be embellishment ideas. Learn to use Fast2Fuse and fabric to make an attractive mat, no mat cutter necessary. This is a demonstration and ideas class. Optional but not necessary: bring some needlework to get finishing and framing ideas.

 

Repro Divas

Lovers of small reproduction quilts with a desire to learn more about quilts and fabrics of the 1800’s, this class is for you. We will use the quilts in the book “Fat Quarter Quilting” by Lori Smith, as inspiration. Each student will be encouraged to design their own quilts from this inspiration and using what we have learned from making other reproduction style quilts. The camaraderie and encouragement from other “Divas” will drive you to new heights of creativity. “Divas” were formerly the “Jo Morton Little Women Club” and therefore can purchase the Jo #9 and make these quilts as well. We will explore medallion quilts, strip set quilts, and collage style quilts this quarter.

 

Log Cabin Techniques

Let Linda show you how much fun Log Cabin blocks can be to sew. Bring some of your strips or stash and learn the correct cutting and piecing techniques. You’ll be surprised at the many different setting options you’ll have with this traditional block, whether sewn in reproduction, contemporary, feedsack or batik fabrics. With a few special techniques and tips, you’ll be making perfect blocks in no time, and love the versatility of the Log Cabin block.

 

Precision Machine Piecing

Are you interested in advancing and improving  workmanship in machine piecing? Wanda will show  the proper steps for pinning, cutting, sewing and pressing. You’ll master the ¼” seam allowance, sew straight, for a perfect finished block.

 

Retro Aprons

Come and explore the world of aprons…from vintage aprons to new aprons that “look vintage”. You will sew an apron  using the booklet More Retro Aprons by Taylor Made Designs. You’ll make an apron in class - perfect for a gift or for yourself! Come and re-discover the lost art of sewing an apron… Make one for every holiday!

 

Underground Railroad Club

Take a trip on the Underground Railroad.  Passengers will learn interesting facts and history about the treacherous trip to freedom.  Each month you will make several blocks depicting different parts of the trip and using a new technique.  This is a great way to learn new skills or try out some of the new rulers that are available.  At the end of the year you'll have enough blocks to make a great sampler quilt!  Muriel’s our travel guide and train conductor!

 

Curved Piecing and More

Learn how easy it is to master curved piecing along with set-in and partial seaming. All of these techniques will add a great dimension to your quilting skills. We will also concentrate on our best ¼" seam allowance. It is the key to success.

 

Double Wedding Ring

If you have always admired the old fashioned Double Wedding Ring Quilt, now you have the opportunity to make one the easy way. We’ll make a three ring table runner in class using Marti Michell's templates.After you master this block you’ll be  on your way to make a quilt for your bed.

 

Primitive Club

If you like Jan Pateck, Linda Brannock, Kim Diehl, Cheri Saffiote Payne, this is the club for you. Fran will guide you as you work on any primitive project. However each month new primitive additional projects will be introduced.  Some projects will use some wool. The club is perfect for all skill levels… a great place to share the primitive experience.

 

Early Sewing Bird

Are you interested in learning sewing skills that will allow you to express your personal style and individuality? This is a 3 session class that will cover  the basics of fabrics, patterns, notions, cutting and construction. You'll  complete a beginning sewing project of our choice. In the first session, learn the basics of fabrics, sewing machines, notions and patterns. In the second session,  you'll layout your pattern, cut and do all the marking and begin construction. In the last session,  finishing techniques and hand sewing will be discussed and you'll complete your project.

Enroll today at our Finishing School where you’ll learn techniques and tips for finishing those patchwork, appliqué and quilting projects. Whether you’re working on a new or unfinished block of the month, or being tested on how to finish a quilt you’ve started, it’s time to enroll! Students are encouraged to bring their work in progress and their machine and ‘graduate’ at the end of the quarter as a ‘well rounded’ patch worker. Free patterns will be given out monthly – included will be an organized plan in working with your stash – you’ll learn about color, setting and border options…plus lots of inspiration. The first class will be orientation as we make out our ‘lesson plan’ for this semester. Guaranteed to be a fun and rewarding class.

Open your imagination by ‘Stepping outside the Box’ and challenge yourself to design.  In each class different colors, blocks, and design ideas will be presented so that you can design whatever size quilt you want to make – large, small, or in-between. Once you decide on your design you will begin making blocks in class. Sign up for both classes or choose just one – the choice is yours.

Have you been curious about this amazing computer drawing program from Electric Quilt. It’s easier than ever to learn. Our beginner's guide will show you just how user-friendly the program is - by the end of class you will have designed your very own quilt, and have the confidence to continue designing.  Best of all, EQ can serve as a virtual design wall, to audition fabrics, block placement, setting options, border sizes, etc. You can see before you sew!  This is a hands-on class, bring your laptop with EQ loaded.  If you’re  thinking of purchasing the program, you can  share the workstation in the classroom.  “Once you EQ”, your computer will become an important tool in your sewing room!

 

Baltimore Album – New Series

A new series is starting as we have had many requests for this popular year-long study in the making of a Baltimore Album style quilt. Under Wanda’s direction, you’ll learn different techniques and the history while constructing this heirloom quilt. Learn something different every month. Those who have started a Baltimore Album quilt can join this group if you still need help or just like being with a group to keep you motivated.

 

Advanced Baltimore Study

Our Advanced group is going strong, and you can still join us if you have Baltimore Album experience.  You can work on a current project, or concentrate on re-creating one of many antique quilts from that era. Some are finishing their first Baltimore Album quilt while others are working on the Metropolitan, the Captain Russell or the Mary Simon quilts. Join us as we explore these wonderful quilts.
